Another Argument Supporting Public Education!

There has been a lot of talk lately about the privatization of education.

This issue has come up before. This Mick Stevens cartoon appeared in New Yorker magazine in 1992.

Need I say more?

One Response to Another Argument Supporting Public Education!

  1. Lauren says:

I hope this doesn’t sound hypocritical, coming from an administrator at a private (we call them Independent) school. I think there’s a real difference between schools like mine and the “commercialized” schools that could emerge from privatization.

I am the beneficiary of an outstanding public school education, back when the state of Massachusetts had money to spend on programs like multiple foreign languages, gifted & talented courses, AP classes, and real laboratory science. I believe in that kind of education for all kids, and I absolutely believe that public education is essential for our country to maintain (or to take back) its role as a world leader economically and intellectually. How is it that our country can be home to the best universities in the world, and yet maintain some of the worst public schools? I train people to become teachers in our public schools, and I take great pride in knowing that I am sending folks out into our classrooms full of ideals, a sense of purpose, and a commitment to continuing the tradition of education for all.
